The Update NPC Text option in the Comfort tab will cause MMR to update certain NPC dialogue and in-world text to match the randomized state of the seed. Some contextual hints will also be provided, which are in addition to any other hints active in the seed. There are two types of text changes: text peeks, which list the item placed on a specific check, and text region hints, which give the region of a specific item.
The Oath hint, Remains hint, and Fairy/Token hints are governed by different options and aren't covered here. See Hints for those.
Not all seeds use Update NPC Text! In particular, most competitive settings leave the option off.
Text Peeks
The following checks will have their contents mentioned by Update NPC Text. These checks are still eligible to be WotH, much like model-peekable checks are.
- Big Bomb Bag Purchase
- Before the Old Lady event in North Clock Town, talk to the owner of the Clock Town Bomb Shop and he'll mention the incoming delivery.
- At the Old Lady event, the Old Lady will mention what she's carrying after Sakon is successfully stopped.
- After the Old Lady event (if it was missed), talk to the Old Lady at the Clock Town Bomb Shop and she'll mention what was lost.
- Bank Reward #1
- Talk to the Banker for the first time and he'll mention this reward.
- Ocean Spider House Rewards
- Talk to the Ocean Spider House reward giver, who appears atop the South Clock Town tower on Night 1, and he'll mention the Day 1, Day 2, and Day 3 Ocean Spider House rewards in that order. All three will be given even when some are junked or unshuffled.
- Romani's Game
- If you are asked the Keaton Quiz question about the song that Romani teaches you, the answer will be accurate for your seed (instead of always being Epona's Song). Note that the Keaton Quiz has thirty possible questions.
- Milk Bar Chateau
- If you are asked the Keaton Quiz question about the vintage milk sold at the Milk Bar, the answer will be accurate for your seed (instead of always being Chateau Romani).
- Alternatively, visit the Milk Bar between 10 AM and 6 PM on any day and talk to Mr. Barten twice. He will mention the item and its price.
- Beaver Race #1
- As Zora Link, talk to the Zora on the left of the Zora Cape Jar Game and he will mention the reward for the first Beaver Race.
- Beaver Race #2
- Win Beaver Race #1 and the Beavers will mention the reward for Beaver Race #2.
- Day 1 Grave Tablet
- Read the Night 1 gravestone to learn what song (or possibly item, if Mix Songs with Items is on) is guarded by its Iron Knuckle.
- Iron Knuckle Chest
- Read the Night 2 gravestone to learn what item is guarded by its Iron Knuckle.
- Dampe Digging
- Read the Night 3 gravestone to learn what item is guarded by its Big Poe.
Text Region Hints
The following items will have their regions hinted by Update NPC Text. Items hinted this way are not directly eligible for a WotH hint. (If the same region receives a WotH, it will be for a different required item.) If the item is on a multi-location check, only one region will be named.
- Powder Keg
- As Goron Link, talk to the Powder Keg seller in the Clock Town Bomb Shop and he'll hint the region of the Powder Keg.
- Garo's Mask
- Approach the Road to Ikana cliffside and its ghost will hint the region of the Garo's Mask.
- Bottle of Gold Dust
- After thawing the Mountain Smithy's forge, talk to Gabora and Zubora (the NPCs who run the Smithy) any time on Day 2 and Zubora will hint the region of the Bottle of Gold Dust.
- Empty Bottle (from Beaver Race)
- As Zora Link, visit Zora Hall and talk to Evan twice. He'll hint the region of the Empty Bottle originally from the Beaver Race.
- Song of Time (if randomized)
- Talk to the Scarecrow in either the Clock Town Trading Post or the Astral Observatory and he'll hint the region of the Song of Time.
- Song of Soaring (if randomized)
- Visit Southern Swamp and the Owl will appear to hint the region of the Song of Soaring.
